Eating at the Worst Rated Michelin Starred Restaurant - Astukari Newsletter #80
Hi friends,
JBR has already been off to a good start, as we continue our initial “community” phase, which at this point I predict will last the next year or so. I don’t have too many special life updates this week, so I’ll leave it to the “making” section to talk about projects!
🔨What I’ve Been Making
New writing: On JBR, we released our first article — Our Take on NFTs — to apparently great fanfare on HackerNews. Except at that point I assumed it would get no views, and so I didn’t actually have the site set up to retain traffic. Whoops! Good thing there will be a lot more than that coming. Meanwhile on the blog, we had The Work After Work and There Is No Metaverse.
New video/audio: On the podcast, the Uncertainty Principle episode was uploaded, while on the main YT channel we had a video on the Ubermensch and on the second channel we continued with highlights from me Watching Old Videos.
Other projects: Like I said, mostly JBR. We’ve been focusing on building our Discord presence (join down below) as well as “scouting out” artists on our Twitter. Twitter is currently used as an art curation tool, which I enjoy doing and see it being as in the long-term future.
📚What I’ve Been Reading
The Triumph and Terror of Wang Huning - A profile on the Robert Moses of China. Just like Moses, a case of “morally reprehensible, but take notes!”. Persuasion and power can take both the morally strong and morally weak person far. It’s more of an achievement to be morally strong and powerful, anyway.
Why Tokyo Works - Went down a big Tokyo rabbit hole this week, for no particular reason other than being recommended a lot of Tokyo content. The city, overall, has its shit together a lot more than most of the places in the world. Would be interesting to visit just for that reason!
Eating at the Worst Rated Michelin Starred Restaurant - Okay, okay, yes — not a smart people article. BUT, I was hooked on this story and it still baffles me why this place has a Michelin star to begin with; probably a good idea for a sequel story. Was it the case of a great founder and terrible descendants? A sibling rivalry, as the restaurant name would suggest? Or perhaps some “greasing” of Michelin’s pockets? Regardless, it’s rather shocking — and also hilarious — that such a restaurant exists.
How to Create a Startup Marketing Plan - I very rarely suggest how-to articles unless they comprehensively and practically explain their subject. This is one of those rare exceptions — a lot of good advice here for both SEO and otherwise.
The Three-Hour Brand Sprint - Speaking of simple and practical advice, we actually used this three-hour sprint when crafting JBR. Nowadays I usually stay away from VC content unless it’s an individual creator like Housel, but what’s not to like about this easy-to-use brand strategy?
