So I figure with us splitting fiction back over to JBR, it was time for a true revival of this newsletter. What better way to do it than to bring back the old school formula — five articles a week, handpicked by yours truly.
I don’t have too much more to say here, so let’s just get into it.
Building an early warning system for LLM-aided biological threat creation
OpenAI recently did a study with a few other institutions as to whether or not a LLM (in its current state) could help someone create a biological weapon. So far the answer here is no, but there’s no telling how this back-and-forth will go with bad actors trying to deliver “malicious information” into these models to supply illegal information.
Robocop: Rogue City and the curse of the shooter/rpg genre smash.
RPG Shooters have always been the most promising subgenre, however they conflict with each other on more than one occasion. For example, shooter flow requires an enemy to typically be downed within 2-3 shots, but the RPG system of scaling would require all later game enemies to take much more than this, giving the impression of “bullet sponge” enemies you might see in places like Borderlands 2 or Fallout 4.
How to deal with receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Big Tech
I always love to read “David versus Goliath” legal stories and guides, because its one of those things that I can just assume happens to everyone. Me and Barclay both take the “Moses Route” when it comes to dealing with a legal issue — go out to the world, tell them your take before the enemy can, make sure you’re very persuasive (not super hard if its already a David versus Goliath sort of thing).
How to do things if you're not that smart and don't have any talent
Surprisingly, that title is supposed to be literal — it is actually just a list of things to do if you are untalented and stupid to still get ahead in work. Some of them are pretty depressing (just be a grunt) whereas others are actually pretty good “hacks” to get around this issue, such as making apps with NoCode tools and using ChatGPT to learn skills faster.
AI Tips for Social Media Marketers
Some surprisingly really good AI takes for marketing coming from SocialMediaToday. If you’re new to AI and you have something to market to others (we all do) then I would recommend giving this a read!
